Please keep your thoughts and prayers with Angie Slate.
(Dayton - Jamestown - Xenia) Two weeks ago Angie Slate was on a business trip to New Jersey. She became very ill and was placed in ICU. Brian got on a jet and flew over to be with her as soon as he heard the news. The doctors were not sure what was wrong with Angie but suspected food poisoning. She was treated for food poisoning but did not get any better. The doctors then suspected she had been stricken with Guillain Barre Syndrome. Angie was vented and stabilized. Brian arranged for Angie to fly home on a private airplane ambulance with medical staff on board. Angie arrived at MVH on Tuesday, April 24th. Her two children were able to see their mom for the first time in over a week. Insurance did not pay for Angie's flight. The cost of the flight was $11,200. Angie is in ICU at MVH. She is showing small improvements everyday. Angie and the Slate family mean a lot to Club X Soccer. They have a passion for volunteering their valuable time to see kids learn the game of soccer and have fun. Angie was voted in as the Club X Soccer Treasurer in January. Brian was voted in as the U8-U14 Director of Boys in January. Brian is also the Head Coach of the Club X Flash U11 Boys. The entire Club X Soccer Executive Board is praying that Angie will continue to get stronger each day. It is a long road to recovery, but Angie is a strong women and is fighting everyday to get better. Please pray for Angie and the Slate family with us. Thank You. There is several fundraisers going on right now to help pay for the uncovered medical expenses. Please email Brandee Krajicek to get information on the fundraisers or to just give a donation.

Spirk takes the helm as Director of Coaching!
(4-18-12 -- Xenia) Club X Soccer is pleased to announce the hiring of Steve Spirk as the Director of Coaching. Look for some great improvements, including coaches training sessions.

Steve Spirk has established himself as one of the top coaches in collegiate soccer.

Under his guidance, the 2010 squad made its fifth straight appearance in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

Winning is the standard, not the exception, in Spirk’s life in soccer — both as a player and coach. As a prep star at Northmont High School in Dayton, he was a three-time All-Ohio selection.

He continued his playing career at Wilmington College, where he was a four-time NAIA All-American. From 1977 to 1980, Spirk racked up numbers that have stood the test of time. His name is still atop virtually every WC statistical category, including career goals (74), career assists (43), career points (191), single-season points (57 and 54) and season goals (22 twice).

No player had a bigger role in the genesis of Wilmington College soccer than Spirk. His Wilmington squads of the late ’70s compiled a 53-15-3 (.768) record as the WC men’s team grew to national prominence.

In 1996, Spirk’s accomplishments were acknowledged by his induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame. By that time, Spirk also was making a name for himself in the coaching ranks. Spirk took over a Wilmington team in 1992 that had suffered through back-to-back losing seasons. In 1993, Wilmington finished 17-3-0 and the 1994 team went 19-3-0 and made the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament.

And the winning has continued. In 19 seasons on the Wilmington sideline, Spirk has put together a 242-105-27 record, qualified for six NCAA tournaments and advanced to the Sweet 16 three times.

“One of the biggest challenges in coaching is to get better every season,” Spirk said. “I think I’ve learned some things along the way, in terms of dealing with and motivating players. I understand that the X’s and O’s are important, but I’ve also tried to learn how to better deal with players and situations. Our conference has changed over the years and the game of soccer has changed over the years. I’ve also tried to change — in terms of tactics and how we do things.”

A 1992 Wilmington College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Spirk has earned the respect of his coaching peers, both regionally and across the nation. He was the Association of Mideast Colleges Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 and the OAC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003. He was named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year and finalist for National Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996.

Spirk’s teams are as good in the classroom as they are on the field. His teams have earned the Women’s Collegiate Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 16 of the past 17 years. The Lady Quakers are epitome of student-athletes.

“When we recruit good athletes, we’re looking for the top students who also excel on the soccer field,” Spirk said. “It’s very rare that we get a player who doesn’t have the same kind of success academically as they do on the soccer pitch. It’s really something that we expect to achieve every year.”

Spirk also is WC’s director of athletic development. (Article courtesy of WC Sports Information)

With these two wins they advanced to the finals, but the team wasn't going to lie down for their last group play game Sunday morning. The team talked about having a good game to prepare us for the finals. They beat KSA Elite with another shutout win 2-0. On Saturday afternoon the Blue Devils faced off against the Cincinnati United Wolverines. The Blue Devils scored twice in the second period to notch a 2-0 victory. Going into Sunday the Blue Devils were tied head to head with Penns Forrest of Pennsylvania in the standings, but were down by differential. After going down 2-0 after a very sluggish start they pulled it back to 2-1 ten seconds before half-time. The Arsenal tied it up 2-2 with ten minutes left in the game and nearly won in regular time with a last second head ball attempt that went wide. They eventually lost the finals in PKs 3-4. WHAT ARE PARENTS SAYING ABOUT THE X ACADEMY?
Here is what one parent said about the Spring 2012 X Academy. "I just wanted to let you and the other members of the X Academy Staff know that my son is learning so much during the Wednesday night training. He has gotten so much better and is having a lot of fun. Are you going to do the training this fall? They don't do any training where our son was playing at before. We will be back in the Fall. If my son chooses soccer as his sport, then the X Academy will give him the opportunity to move on to the next level."
Thanks much,
X Academy Mom
