Blue Devils U17 Boys Win TMT Title!
(4-28-13 -- Xenia) The Club X Blue Devils ran a clean sheet to win the Tornado Memorial Championship! On Saturday the Blue Devils defeated Global SC 4-0 and the Crew Juniors Black 4-0. On Sunday morning the Blue Devils defeated WC United Blue 7-0. This set-up a rematch with Crew Juniors Black for the Championship Match on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils beat the Crew Juniors Black 6-0 to win the Championship! The Blue Devils' Coaching Staff and parents are very proud of the boys and their effort!

United Wins Under 15 Division
(4-28-13 -- Xenia) The tournament was a Tale of Two Days for the United girls. Day 1 saw the girls play to two ties with Cincinnati United Explosion and Brookville Select by score of 2-2. The coaches talked to the girls on Sunday morning about not having their A game on Saturday, but they were in the drivers seat to determine if they would make the final. A 2-0 lead by United until the extra time PK made the final score 2-1 in United's favor against the West Virginia CFC Fusion team. A rematch with Cincy United was the final. The girls came out determined to make a statement and the girls scored two goals and then used organized defense to give them the Title.

Lightning Finishes Runner up in Combined U15/U16 Bracket
(4-28-13 -- Xenia) The boys came out strong on Saturday posting two convincing wins beating Hilliard FC 5-1 and Bath Select 8-0. Already advancing to the finals due to the other results they met the other team that had already advanced to the finals - Under 16 Ohio Galaxies Red. The Lightning fell to Galaxies 6-1. Now the two teams would meet again in the Final. The coaches decided to change the strategy and formation to better utilize our strengths and our chances against the older more experienced Galaxy team. A first half PK gave the Galaxies the lead but the Lightning boys never stopped working hard and they had a few near chances to tie it up. The boys were very upbeat at the half and bought in to the strategy. A second goal by Galaxies gave them the 2-0 lead and then the weather delay came. Battling injuries (two guys were sitting out with ice bags on their bodies) and only one sub left it was probably a blessing to get a delay to rest and recover. The weather conditions continued to look poor so the last 17 minutes were not finished.

CX Inferno U13 Boys Earn Finalist Honors at the KSA Adidas Turf Classic
(3-10-13 -- Kentucky) Congratulations to the Club X Inferno, U13 boys, over the March 9-10 weekend. They competed in the top bracket of the KSA adidas Turf Classic and were finalists after competing in a few hard-fought games. In their preliminary games they tied WC United Blue 2-2, and defeated Cincinnati United Fury 3-2 and SCSA Red Crew (IN) 2-1. SCSA Red Crew is currently the #4 team in Indiana in the U13 age group. The Inferno advanced to the final match against Hoosier FC Elite (the #3 team in Indiana) and ended up losing 1-0 from a 35-yard free-kick. The guys battled hard but came up a bit short realizing that their pre-season conditioning needs a little work. It was a great first outing and the speed of play on the all turf fields proved a great warm up for the coming league season.

CX Arsenal U18 Boys Earn Finalist Honors at the KSA Adidas Turf Classic
(3-10-13 -- Kentucky) Club X would like to extend a “good job” to the Club X Arsenal, U18 boys, for their finals appearance at the KSA adidas Turf Classic over the March 9-10 weekend. The Arsenal won both of their Flight A games by score lines of 4-1 vs. the Ohio Elite Soccer Academy Gold and 2-0 vs. Taylor Attack (MI). Their early Sunday morning cross-over game didn’t go as well losing 3-1 vs. Indiana Invaders (IN) having already secured the finals spot. In the finals they played against a very fast Lou Fusz SC team from Missouri. The Arsenal gave up an early break-away goal and that score line held throughout the match causing them to lose 1-0. They experienced playing teams from 4 different states and playing on a 120 x 80 college stadium field. They know what’s needed to win their league games and they’ve already started working towards a successful spring season.

Spirk takes the helm as Director of Coaching!
(4-18-12 -- Xenia) Club X Soccer is pleased to announce the hiring of Steve Spirk as the Director of Coaching. Look for some great improvements, including coaches training sessions.

Steve Spirk has established himself as one of the top coaches in collegiate soccer.

Under his guidance, the 2010 squad made its fifth straight appearance in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

Winning is the standard, not the exception, in Spirk’s life in soccer — both as a player and coach. As a prep star at Northmont High School in Dayton, he was a three-time All-Ohio selection.

He continued his playing career at Wilmington College, where he was a four-time NAIA All-American. From 1977 to 1980, Spirk racked up numbers that have stood the test of time. His name is still atop virtually every WC statistical category, including career goals (74), career assists (43), career points (191), single-season points (57 and 54) and season goals (22 twice).

No player had a bigger role in the genesis of Wilmington College soccer than Spirk. His Wilmington squads of the late ’70s compiled a 53-15-3 (.768) record as the WC men’s team grew to national prominence.

In 1996, Spirk’s accomplishments were acknowledged by his induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame. By that time, Spirk also was making a name for himself in the coaching ranks. Spirk took over a Wilmington team in 1992 that had suffered through back-to-back losing seasons. In 1993, Wilmington finished 17-3-0 and the 1994 team went 19-3-0 and made the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament.

And the winning has continued. In 19 seasons on the Wilmington sideline, Spirk has put together a 242-105-27 record, qualified for six NCAA tournaments and advanced to the Sweet 16 three times.

“One of the biggest challenges in coaching is to get better every season,” Spirk said. “I think I’ve learned some things along the way, in terms of dealing with and motivating players. I understand that the X’s and O’s are important, but I’ve also tried to learn how to better deal with players and situations. Our conference has changed over the years and the game of soccer has changed over the years. I’ve also tried to change — in terms of tactics and how we do things.”

A 1992 Wilmington College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Spirk has earned the respect of his coaching peers, both regionally and across the nation. He was the Association of Mideast Colleges Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 and the OAC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003. He was named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year and finalist for National Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996.

Spirk’s teams are as good in the classroom as they are on the field. His teams have earned the Women’s Collegiate Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 16 of the past 17 years. The Lady Quakers are epitome of student-athletes.

“When we recruit good athletes, we’re looking for the top students who also excel on the soccer field,” Spirk said. “It’s very rare that we get a player who doesn’t have the same kind of success academically as they do on the soccer pitch. It’s really something that we expect to achieve every year.”

Spirk also is WC’s director of athletic development. (Article courtesy of WC Sports Information)
